UPDATE AND NOTES: The traditional style NATO can (Wehrmacht) was indeed being made, in Germany, pre NATO. Obviously since NATO didn't come until after WWII, they wouldn't of been called NATO cans. The factory was later uprooted and moved to Latvia, now owned by Valpro. It is believed that the jerry can design that we know today was invented in 1937 after WW1. I'm not sure when the nick name Jerrycan came to be, though the name Jerry was slang for Germans. The US along with other allies copied the design. Hopefully this helps and I will pin the comment so other people can learn. And yes, I know the "S" is Illinois is "silent". Links are not allowed and automatically removed by a YouTube filter, as I do not have time to make sure they are safe for other viewers. Also because these cans are not vented, if you keep the caps/rings tight, the pressure inside the can may cause the rings to crack. If the can is full of fuel, this is not as likely as there is less air in the can to expand. I only keep my caps tight during transport. The threads on this can are the same threads as the plastic MidWest gas cans. Aftermarket caps and rings can be found here: https://ezpourspout.com/how-to-choose-the-best-spout-base-cap-for-your-gas-can/ You can also 3d print rings and caps here (I had to increase the size 2% for a perfect fit): https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2757708
I've half a dozen real surplus NATO cans that have a metal flap type lid. Only down side is the inside coating is coming off, but if you use a strainer or filter it isn't a problem.
They're tall and narrow, which means they tip over more easily.
I had one of these and the stupid plastic lid broke in half and leaked half the fuel out before I seen it. They are P.O.S. NO GOOD NEADS A METAL LID.
The EPA is an unelected bureaucracy it should be dismantled and the responsibility sent back to the states which all have their own now
The closer government is to the people the more responsible it is
It's not the can it's the spout that's worthless . That little plastic hook will slide off from the weight of a full can every time , The bottom line is the bubble heads that invented these things refuse to go back to the drawing board .
I have one, it needs a handle recessed in to control the flow of gas on the back opposite the fuel opening it would give better control.
Any gas can over 1 gal that doesn't have a back handle isn't worth owning. Try tipping and holding even 3 gal of gas without a handle for both arms. Just plain stupid design. All of those.
You should learn more about the history of that can it has an interesting past, and no it wasn't devolved by NATO. The new nozzle defeats some of the original designs.
Like every other gas can in the U.S. it is rendered useless by it's spout.
I hate the f'n EPA. Anytime a government agency gets involved, you can bet they will make a mess of things. Overengineered, overcomplicated and just plain dangerous. Just give me a damn old school spout with a cap on it. I'll take my chances.
Plastic cans can't be left in the sun. The UV rays make the plastic brittle and it will crack, like ours did. If kept inside, they will last a lifetime.
You talk to much about crap!
Don't know why folks have such a hard time with the newer type nozzles. I have several different gas cans with these nozzles and never have a problem with them.
Still no pouring handle. It's like these gas can designers have zero comprehension of center of gravity, and never actually poured anything from a heavy container. Do the lid threads even fit an ez-pour spout?
lol "bad gas" the guy at the recycler will just put it in his truck.
Made in USA!!!!
The Jerry Can was the only decent thing fascist Germany gave the world.
What happened to the old style can with the two inch threaded steel cap with the lugs you could tighten up? they came with a steel screw in spout or one with a rubber press in squeeze lever spout, that works like a plug in a boat. I used those type cans for my backhoe up toll the 1990s even had them after 2000. we always have to take every good idea, that works perfectly well, and toss it right in the Goddamn trash, anything to burden Americans! yay!
Tractor supply sells a kit that has a vent plug, cap and flexible spout (old school !). Works like a charm no more spilled gas ! Cost me 12$ and change.
I hate those new spouts! Spill every time!
They couldn't have made them since WWi as they were only developed for WWii !
I bought 2 of them a year ago, both pour spouts cracked around the threads when installed. Called the company
They sent 2 more. Within a couple of months they too cracked. I ordered some on Amazon from a different company and they're fine. If you do get them, you can expect the caps won't last.
The new plastic cans only last about 3 years before you have to replace it. Recently had the fire dept come around for an inspection and advised me not to keep the cans stored outside. He wanted me to store them inside my garage? What? Not going to happen since I do small metal work with grinding and welding. I bought some Vevor cans and they seem to want to bulge from the gas expansion sitting outside (even in the shade). Dispensing fluid is really good as it has an internal vent with no plastic anywhere. The can you show I like b'cuz of the recessed seam where-as the vevor has a protruded seam
How is $60 for a gas can.. cheap?
Pressing down on a little push mower plastic gas tank like that would break your mower gas tank.
These steel Jerry Cans cannot be purchased or shipped to California, unfortunately.
Anything the EPA has authority over is an absolute goat fornication.
The spout s designed by feces brain bureaucrats, so that things won’t catch fire. Of course it. is an absolute piece of crap. You’ll leak more gas all over the place and have a bigger chance of catching a fire. Also, it will take forever to dispense the fuel ,and if you don’t leak and into flames., You will drop the damn thing because it weighs a ton. Dispensing half an ounce an hour,, It will take forever to get the gas from the can into your device and an accident is bound to occur. This is what happens when you let ignorant bureaucrats from the federal government redesign a perfectly good device into something that’s dangerous and won’t work.
Super lucky your bucket didn’t overturn with the necessary pressure on it.
Boo on the new cans and spouts. They spill more gas and my can sticks open when filling my lawn mower. There are vids that show how to modify the can and I'll be doing that soon.
I bought one of these, Great can, terrible spout. It sucks!
I prefer my Wavian gas can with the cam style spout and stainless steel flex nozzle. More $ but worth it
I have three of thes, the can itself, is well made, the cap/spout just sucks. I also have some of the Chinese made "NATO" style cans and they are far superior to these. I have kept "NON-Ethenol" gas in them for over 4 year without problems. BTW, I use a "shaker" hose on all my cans. If you use them, you need to pull the "flame shield out. Has anyone found a METAL cap that will fit? I don't use the spout except to keep the seal.
Go elswhere. This guy is an idiot.
That flow rate is Crap. Get rid of all that safety crap before you hurt yourself!
Just another reason to defund the EPA
Having used these can more than a few times I can say I like the old PRE-BAN cans from Blitz over these new ones. The new ones might be alright if it were not for the EPS APPROVED spout which is awkward and dangerous. Just yesterday I listened to the tirade of a person who used one of these NEW cans and the expletives aren't fit to repeat around truckers at dinnertime. BUT NOTHING EVER GETS DONE ABOUT THEM. THE EPA IS ALWAYS RIGHT AND NEVER WRONG AND OUR LAWMAKERS DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEIR NEXT STOCK PURCHASE. (Sigh…)
I knew a guy who was using one of those new EPA approved nozzles on his jerry can, who, after spilling gas all over his sleeves and down his pant leg into his shoe, dropped the gas can which caused it to throw a spark when it hit the concrete. He was a good dude.
I prefer Tough Jugs. Holds 5 gallons & no EPA spout. Takes about 60-90 seconds to dump the 5 gallons. Pro tip: place the breather tube down the handle to keep a smooth flow. About $30 ea.
ADd a metal tire valve stem for a vent. They work great.
Spent $140 on a GOOD Jerry can. Metal latching too and NO strainer.
Suggestion: be sure to use ethanol free gas to reduce the risk of rust.
AND use a good quality fuel stabilizer if you plan on storing gas.
For me, I do both AND use the gas annually for rotation purposes.
Remember, you want WINTER BLEND gasoline not summer blend.
There is a difference.
For every 5 gallons of can…each one filled is too heavy.
None of them are good…just go with the cheapest one…once the time comes to replace it…replace it.
Thanks for the video! Are these cans standard dimensions as NATO? As in, you can put them into a mounting bracket to secure to your vehicle as well?
That's the best nozzle I've seen for no spill.
