  1. Why have a balk rule in the first place? The pitcher should be allowed to pick off a runner anytime during the windup until the ball is actually delivered to the batter.

  2. The balk rule is that a pitcher can’t make a movement towards the batter before the pick off if he’s in the wind up motion, he can start the wind up and step off with the raised foot. Usually you see this with righty’s and the lead on third, it just looks weird cause instead of stepping off towards third he stepped off towards second and twisted his body.

However I was under the impression that if you were going to step off during the wind up you had to move toward first or third (depending on the hand you throw with) but if that isn’t the case this isn’t a balk.

I would have stepped off with my back foot and turned so there wouldn’t be a question but if it’s legal it’s legal

  3. This is literally a balk… Front Ankle breaks the plain of back leg. Not only that, but he hesitates to throw in an effort to catch the runner on his way to third, had he been gone already–which is illegal and a balk. The motion must be smooth, continuous, and you may never 'offer' at the plate, which is what Breaking the Plain does.

If you want to do this move succesfully in real life, you need to keep your front ankle in FRONT of your back leg, and simply rotate on your back hip, without moving your ankle. It's genuinely not hard.

  4. I swear so many commenters act like if the pitcher doesn’t make eye contact with the runner, say to the runner “I am about to try to pick you off” and then take a looooong step back towards the base it’s a balk 😂😂
