Tools That Disappoint Adam Savage

What machines would Adam Savage add to his shop if he had more room? Is any part of Adam’s shop designed out of spite?

  1. Oh man did you get a jeweler's pin for cutting on?

Also try inverting the setup and see if you get better results cutting from below or above. I prefer lift/drop from above.

  2. Lol I love the "I am scared of the table saw, I am petrified of the router and the hand planer is a saw movie as a power tool!" Thats about as spot on as one can get 😂

  3. Sort of out of spite. My present home need renovations before I moved in. The contractor quoted $5000 for bookshelves and cabinets in my study. I decided to wait till we moved in and do it myself.
Then covid hit and timber suppliers closed. 18 months down the track with all my books etc in storage I finally got plywood and built the shelves and cabinets for about $500. Keeping things in storage for 18 months cost me about $2000 but I'm still ahead.

  4. Oh no- the spiral blades are for stuff like wax. You don't want that for metal. I mainly use my Knew Concepts saw in Argentium silver, and I use Herkules White Label blades. Most of the time I use 2/0 for single or double layers of 16-22ga. For more intricate stuff I'll go to 4/0, and only when the 4/0 is too big will I grab a 6/0.

  5. I’ve always wanted one of those knew concepts saws but they’re outrageously expensive and out of my budget, I’m keeping my eye out for an old vintage jewellers saw for now

  6. I have had tools I get because seemed handy but didn't use that much others that seemed like good to have but probably not use much are the other way around. Usually I find my stuff at estate auctions, sales etc if it goes for a good price even if maybe didn't need I tend to jump on it. I had a black and decker hand power plane got cheap because seemed handy ended up using numerous times fixing things on the house, some point the blade hit something hard and it just busted the entire blade drum mounting system. I then found a Makita one at an auction ended up getting for about 1/3 new price, used that a handful of times. I know people that had Ryobi stuff i had a few old ones once they were end of life I jumped to Ridgid.

Two years ago I was at an auction saw an old Ford 3400 industrial tractor with loader decent shape but needed minor work. I didn't need it but kept wanting one mainly to move snow, etc even though it's not much recently. I put a bid on it for a price that may buy you a rather basic riding mower thinking no way I'd win it. I did arranged towing it home, spent 4 months fixing things on it. It sits in the garage I'm like why did I get this monster thing, when I'm using it though it's fun, even put in antique tractor show last year.

  7. 4:30 The tools not mailed by fans are, in my experience, tools more useful for either cabinet making or finish carpentry. A small table saw is useful both on the construction site when a skill saw isn't precise enough, as well as a convenience tool in a small cabinet shop when you have a specific setup on your table saw that you don't want to undo. The power plane is great for finish carpentry, and I loved having one when I'd do window casings on older homes with nonuniform thickness wall. The pocket hole jig (I assume that's what Adam meant by the toe nailing hole driller) I've used a lot for building custom cabinets. My biscuit jig I also used a lot for cabinet making to make glue-ups easier to properly line up and a bit stronger.

  8. I can't believe you hate the scroll saw so much, its by far my favourite tool in my woodshop lol. One saw cuts any material I use in any shape I need, everything from 2" thick hardwood to sheets of brass. It has replaced 99% of my handsaw usage and it's effective enough that I don't really need a bandsaw, the only thing it can't do well is perfectly straight, square cuts but that's what the chopsaw is for
