Sub 70 woods rule!
Playing again since 2020, after putting the clubs down in 2005. 62yo military vet here, bad back, but worked hard to get down to a 10hcp.
Cant hit a long iron anymore, and changed all my shafts from steel to Ventus 6. I have a 3,5,7, and a 9 wood. And the thing is, I LOVE that 7 and 9. Much more forgiving also. I will never go back.
I stuffed the pride and put a 7 wood in my bag this year, Taylormade Qi35 tour, loving the ease of hitting it and still getting the yardage I want out of it! WITB is Driver(Qi35 LS-9*), 3, 5, 7 wood(Qi35 tour's), 5-PW(P7CB's) 52*, 56*, 60*(MG4's)
Naah, get both the 7 and 9 wood in the bag.

Most players find 9 woods to be too unreliable, they’re like your deep wedges, 7w is more common, and of course hybrids are great.

I have a 4-wood and 9-wood. The higher lofts definitely help me.
✳️ I game a Callaway Steelhead 111 2002 firm flex 5 & 7 wood which replaces the 3 & 4 irons ✳️
I love long irons and kept 4 iron bc it flies 220 for me. I did add 7 wood bc it flies 235ish and I can play it back and drive it harder to get 240ish if I need that for a par 5.
Today’s irons are too strong not easy to keep on a green. That may be a reason.
As a 70 year old I just couldn’t generate the speed to get 4-5 irons the air anymore, Added a 5 wood and 7 wood, changed my game for the better.
As someone who loves long irons. I probably wouldn’t replace my 4 iron, but putting a seven wood in between a 4 iron and 3 wood sounds like a good idea.
I hit my 7,9 woods out of fairway bunkers too.
Most people with your speed use a very heavy, very tip stiff shaft to keep the spin and peak height under control.
I don't play a 5, 7, or 9 wood, but I do play a 3 and 4 hybrid. I feel like they are just as easy to hit as the woods but still are able to do iron things with them. I know it's counter intuitive to what it's designed for but I can flight them if I want to where I don't think you can really do that with the woods. I feel I get the best of both with the hybrids versus the woods. I don't play rough like Oakmont either. It definitely is dependent on the course your playing and the conditions. I definitely think unless you're a scratch or better handicap leave the long irons out and get yourself lofted fairway woods or hybrids. Your scores will love it as they are just sooo much easier to hit high and far.
