It's a western version of the English classic story, Mayor of Casterbridge.
Young desolate drunkard sells his wife and daughter at farmer's market to a sailor. Was how common people divorced in Eng. in old days. He sobbers up, he can't find his family. The sailor is good to his new wife and daughter, but he dies. Leaves them penniless. They live rough. Mother gets TB. Runs across dastardly husband, as she is dying. He has remorse. But too late. He's wealthy. But I don't remember the ending. Not cheerful I think. Life was hard back then. Is today. Be sure of your choices. One bad choice can curse you and those around you for life. Is the moral of the story. Many such real life stories in England back then. Made into Classic tales.
Charles Dickens wrote of just such real life too. Not fairy tales. Cautionary.
