The Asian miracle is mostly the East Asian miracle, economist Martin Wolf writes in the Financial Times today. East Asia seems to …

  1. When asked by the panel why her brand has more ethnic Chinese wear, she opined that "historically, and even today, Chinese women have progressed significantly faster and further than their Malay and Indian counterparts".

She said her research showed Chinese women were the first Asian women to shake hands with men as it was more culturally acceptable for them to do so. They were also quick to adopt Western dressing such as mini skirts, she added.

"I think as a designer, I can only say that when I play around with the cheongsam, I feel, not that there are less restrictions, but that I can have more fun, and that Chinese women are more receptive," she added.

Many netizens also took offence to the questions the designer – who is of Chinese and Indian parentage – raised about Malay and Indian women.

"Were Malay women allowed by their husbands, fathers or brothers, to dress a certain way? To go out and work?… And we can also ask the same about Indian women. How soon were they released from social shackles?"

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Shunmugam said: "During the Q&A session, I was asked why the cheongsam is a recurring silhouette in my work. I ought to have been crystal clear with my answer and I acknowledge that it was clumsy, hurtful and insensitive. It was also uncharacteristic of the narratives championed in my work.

"I'm rightly being held accountable for what I said and I apologise unreservedly for the comments I made."

The original hour-long video was recorded as part of an ACMtalks series titled "Designing Singapore's contemporary fashion identity" that was posted on Facebook in September last year. It has since been removed.

  2. If causality exists as the ultimate universal truth, free will does not exist. If it ceases to exist as the ultimate universal truth, free will does not exist too. The only purpose of life is its continuation without real purpose. Do you get it?

  3. East Asians don’t go around the world to tell other countries how to run their country, assassinate other countries’s leaders, sanction other countries to death, nor do they sail their warships and submarines into other countries’ coastlines! United Snakes; however, does all of those things!

  4. Funny how Wolf and many others hijack universal things and declare them Western. Like free trade (which has never been free at all in the West), competitive markets (the West is all about aiming for monopolies and destroying competition), economic growth (the driving force ever since the first "company" was created thousands of years ago), education, etc. In reality those things have existed in Asia long before Europe (let alone the US, which didn't even exist, yet). But no, Wolf and the like are trying to put it as if they had come up with those things, kind of a fake Western legacy once Asia takes over.

I noticed the same in another video, where they called China non-communist and instead state capitalist in their desperate effort to pretend like that China only works because it is not communist. With Yugoslavia they resorted to war and other means to destroy a functioning socialist country.

  5. As someone who has lived in both Asia and the West I think East Asia is better than everyone else at the following: They cut the BS out of society, work hard, and choose intelligent and rational leaders instead of emotional and popular ones. I think it's hard for anyone who follows this formula to not succeed. Whether it's on a societal level or an individual level, the formula for success is the same: Don't waste time on BS (Politics, Useless bantering that goes nowhere), make decisions based on intelligence and rationality (Instead of emotions), and simply work hard.

There is no secret to success and it isn't glamorous or glorious, it's actually just plain old boring consistency. That's a pretty hard sell for the rest of the world, and that's the primary reason why nobody else can succeed in getting out of poverty as good as they can.

  6. The economic model that East Asia, particularly China, uses to become rich and to develop their economies is based on the hard work and ingenuity of their people, and on trade and peaceful cooperation with other countries. It is a model that make them rich and, at the same time, allow them to make other countries rich also. The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, which the Chinese government launched in 2013, is one example of how China helps other countries to become rich along with China itself. It is a win-win model.
On the other hand, the economic model that the western countries uses to become rich and to develop their economies is based on stealing the wealth of the non-western countries, using brute force (military might) and other devious means such as lying, cheating, sanctioning, blackmailing, coercion, etc. to carry out their robberies. They have been using this model since the early years of the 16th century when Spain and Portugal sent their armed thugs to the South and Central American to steal gold and silver that belong to the inhabitants of these regions. Soon after, Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany also turned themselves into gangs of thieves and murderers and sent their armed thugs to the other regions of the planet, stealing the earth of the non-western countries and killing all those who dared to oppose them. This is how the western countries became rich and they used their ill-gotten wealth to develop their economies. But, in order for this model to work, the western countries killed over one billion people in the non-western over the last 500 years and impoverished all the non-western countries. It is a win-lose situation or a zero-sum game where the non-western countries lose while the western countries gain.

  7. In fairness, the Middle East hasn’t been able to develop because the US and Europeans (together with Israel) have kept the region unstable. A similar fate would have fallen on South East Asia but the Vietnamese kicked out the French and Americans, and ASEAN kept the region at peace. India and Pakistan suffered from political instability thanks to the Westminster political system, caste hierarchy, religious tensions, military coups, etc. So let’s not be so quick to think there is something special about East Asia. Central Asia is enjoying a high growth rate.

  8. WHY DID BECOME THE US A SUPERPOWER? THE LACK OF CONSERVATISM. WHY DID CHINA BECOME A SUPERPOWER? THE DESTRUCTION OF CONSERVATISM UNDER COMMUNISM. WHY WILL THE US FALL? BECAUSE OF THE DOMINANCE OF CONSERVATISM……. WHAT IS CONSERVATISM???? IT IS THE SPIRITUAL NATURE OF HUMANS TO DEFEND THEIR FAMILY/ TRIBE/ NATION/ PROPERTY/ WEALTH BY ALL MEANS. SO, THE THRUTH OF ADAM SMITH STILL COUNTS TODAY; SOCIO-CAPITALISM WILL BRING WEALTH TO ALL NATIONS. DEATH TO ALL CONSERVATISM.

  9. When people in US say "Asian", they mean east and southeast Asia. They dont include people from Indian subcontinent or Middle east.

When people in UK say "Asain", they mean Indian subcontinent.

  10. I think it's has more to do with relative stability in east Asia compared to say the middle east/west asia and Africa. Because China has been relatively stable for the last half century.
You can see where imperial powers still has/had a lot of control or influence are the same regions that are still poor and developing way slower. I think south Korea is exception because the US needed a good forward industrial base at the border of China if war was suppose to break out. Japan is a beaten down imperial army their leadership are just part of the global capitalist class. Hopefully in this more multipolar world other regions can enjoy some stable and peaceful periods to develop.

  11. East Asians prefer peace. Mainly interested in trades and value education. West also prefers peace, but only apply to their own countries, while some plotting proxy wars all over the world. West also prefers trades, but by illegally occupied other nations and stealing their resources. West also values education, but most prefer to be professional athletes over scientists.

  12. Destruction of environment through over exploitation of it's resources to meet ever increasing greed is termed as 'development' these days. Thinking the oxford English dictionary is quite flexible.

  13. I believe it's the cycle thing. Like Ray Dalio said. The west has their good time and now the east, starting from east Asia and flow to south east Asia and the middle east. Next will be Africa or South America.

  14. Rfreshing view from someone from the mainstream media…. its about time there's some balanced reporting instead of the incessant finger pointing

  15. East Asia (China, Taiwan, Hongkong, Koreas, Japan, Singapore) have the highest IQ level in the world, higher than Europe and the USA, higher than Jewish state of Israel. If you don’t believe it go for a search in google.
Some people doubted and saying that if the EAST Asians are so smart then why they produced not so many Nobel winners, why most of the modern technology inventions are from Europeans/Americans? That’s not easy to answer, if you don’t know much history. The reasons why modern technologies were discovered in Europe/USA is because of best timing : Europe just emerged from the dark age and slowly reformed and started developing which thanks to the industrial revolution in 17th century, and therefore the whole continent benefits, and there was other important thing was that, Europeans stole Chinese invention of gun power, then they made it into guns/cannons, that helped them conquered the world…meantimes….China was sunk down to chaotic, thanks to the rulers from the normad tribe: the Manchu. Taking advantage of the weakest Chinese dynasty, western powers came to loot china, seized ports and coastal land, poisoned Chinese people with opium….thats why Chinese were so backward during that humiliating century, Only Japan managed to developed. If China had a good and strong government , and at the same times Europe was in chaos…then China+Japan+Korea may have conquered Europe , and they would sure invented most if not all modern technology instead, and of course most of the Nobel winners would have been East Asians

  16. The yearning for education arguably seeped from East to West. The idea of competitive examinations as a meritocratic means to harness the best brains in service of society came from China. The university at Nalanda, India preceded by centuries anything similar in the West.

  17. Then east asia will absolutely be attacked (not necessarily by military means) by the west, including the so called allies like Japan and SKorea, when their time come.
