I thought it may have been someone playing a prank on him, but then when he said he heard someone in his mothers voice asking him to open the door that changed my mind because unless he was lying about that, which I don't think he seems to be, someone would have had to have got a recording of his mothers voice saying those exact words, which although not impossible is still unlikely.
