It takes skill to shoot with a wood stick, composites do 90 percent of the work for you. You can't just wind up and hack it with a wood stick and expect it NOT to break, I remember kids including myself going through sticks left and right developing a cannon. Not saying Ovi lacks skill because he obviously doesn't he just probably hasn't used a wooden stick since he was a little kid because composites were already a thing while he was still in the juniors.
