chinese, japanese and korean don't regard vietnam as East asia . they think. . vietnam is a foreign country . appearance, climate, traditional music, food, historical exchanges. . Etc. Parts of vietnam are similar to East asia but that is because the part of nothern vietnam was belong to china in the past. Even East Asians consider South China's climate and appearance more like Southeast Asia
Vietnam is an East Asia country the same way as Australia and USA are Western countries.

You can also think of it the other way around.
Just as Vietnam is similar to southern China, it can also be an idea that southern China is similar to Southeast Asia. Because cultural boundaries between regions are rarely very clear, it may not be a good idea to classify them dichotomously.
I think it is same with the Philippines. We are mostly a hispanic culture but we are still southeast asians. We are not like the hispanics where we have big drug cartels or the same income with hispanics but we can definitely feel a connection. Probably the same with vietnamese that they feel a connection to china but not very much act like chinese which why the country is not as rich as those in east asia.

The Southeast Asian world also knows that northern Vietnam was once a province ofx China,and southern Vietnam is champa which was annexed,just like Southern Thailand is the Malay Peninsula which was annexed.

East asian is not superior race. They aren't white caucasian people. East asian many mock southeast asian apperance but many white and se asian mock east asian apperance either. We are all human.

Southeast Asia. If Vietnam is east Asia , so is Thailand. In fact there are more fair skinned people in Thailand and thais are officially taller. I am laughing when Vietnamese think they are east Asians . Vietnam can quit asean and join east Asia, let’s see what China, Japan and SK think of them.

Another characteristic of East Asia is that it was not colonized by Europe. Of course, China and Japan gave Europe part of the city (Hong Kong, Dejima etc), but It is different from colonization.
Northern Vietnam (including Hanoi) is subtropical, not tropical. Only Central and Southern Vietnam are tropical. Determining climate solely through latitude and topography is an oversimplification, even subtropical climates have different weather types. Austroasiatic languages came from Southern China. The Vietnamese speak a Vietic language while Cambodians don't, and saying the Vietnamese and Cambodians are cousins only because both speak Austroasiatic languages is like saying Swedish people and Bangladeshi people are cousins only because both speak Indo-European languages. Vietnam is Southeast Asia because "Southeast Asia" is a geographical concept although Vietnam is part of the Sinosphere.

Ancient Vietnam belongs to East Asia, we were influenced by Confucianism thousands of years ago like China, Japan and Korea. Later, the Nguyen dynasty expanded its territory, annexing the lands of Champa, Khmer… so there was cultural interference.
