  1. John Wayne’s one of the greatest artists in the world and cinema history and he is my favourite artist and he is Iranian people’s favourite artist gods blesses his soul ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  2. Love his movie's, but watching this again as an adult there's so many funny things about it, like towards the end the French soldiers lining up with swords and several of John's guys getting shot when none of the french had gun's 🤣🤣🤣

  3. Royal Dano appeared as a confederate officer at the beginning of a great film, who refused to concede defeat after Lee surrendered.People like that are FANATICS (who continued to get their men killed ) , they couldn't countenance the fact that they lost.IN some remote parts of the South , such fanatics still exist.

  4. Why would an army that’s downsizing from a long war need to buy more horses? If anything the post-Appomatox Army was flush with excess war horses. The plot’s a bit thin.

  5. 41 yo and while not as versed as others with all of his films, John Wayne and others of his peerage are the hallmarks of cinema to me. The golden age of film we so desperately need a return to.

  6. First saw this when I was a kid. I think it was on in the afternoon one time when had, ehem, a "tummy bug" (I skived off). I remember being captivated in my lonely pain (the house was wonderfully empty – apart from our shouty dog and lugubrious old cat).

I haven't seen it for what must be 35 years (at least!). I'm still captivated. What a superb story and perfectly paced movie.

  7. I keep coming back to this scene because it's incomprehensible:
    • Why do the Confederate soldiers so readily honor the flag of truce after losing so many men in a pitched battle?
    • Why does the major offer to shake hands with the enemy commander?
    • How can there be such strict adherence to a code of honor amid such implacable hostilities?

  8. My dad was an extra in "The Big Trail" which was mostly filmed in Teton County, Wyoming. This was John Wayne's breakout film in 1939. Dad took me to all the John Wayne movies until he died in 1972. One of many fond memories of a dad who a cowboy himself; a man's man. Dad raised me to be respectful of others, and he didn't tolerate loudmouths.
