The book they are talking about is Jerusalem: The Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore. Read it a few years ago and traveled to Jerusalem a few weeks later. How could a place be so beautiful (and a lot of that is cultural bias) and horrendous at the same time? Montefiore pulls no punches. Maybe the book ruined it for me. It's like going to a 5 star steak restaurant but first let's take a tour through the cattle ranch and slaughterhouse. Memories I'll never forget. Sitting in front of Damascus Gate. Looking at the Dome of the Rock from the Garden of Gethsemane. Jewish coworker asked me how was my trip. I said "depressing". She was flabbergasted.
