Our family moved to Anchorage, AK in 1960, right after it became a state. It was far enough out of town to be able to sit on the front porch and shoot tin cans off our fence.(To keep the moose out of the yard!) We were there for the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, and I've been homesick ever since. It was our own adventure!
“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.
Family movies, when done with a good plot and production values, are hard to beat, especially considering the garbage being churned out by Hollywood in recent years. 🙄
What’s most impressive about this film is that when the dog is interacting with the other animals the dog doesn’t get hurt because the animals where trained long before the movie started filming. Example when the the wolfs are chasing the girl they are actually real wolfs in the cut scenes but blink and you will miss when the girl and the dog are up close and interacting with the “wolfs” there huskies that closely resemble the real wolfs with clever camera work and quick cuts you would never know that they where huskies. Smart because a real wild wolf would kill the dog no matter how much training they go through.
Was outdoors with my WWII veteran Dad many times, but never got to do as much as this. Would have loved living in the forest as a kid. Much better than city life, for sure. Great movie. One thing you should always be armed with both a pistol and a rifle. Don't do things as he did in this movie.
70s back when an 8 yr old could outrun a grizzly and wolves and mountain lions and swim through flooded rapids… giggles. And dont forget that opening scene- riding in the back- leaning against the tailgate of a pick up truck in highway traffic.
I was born in '76 but I do remember when there was a time when you were able to ride in the bed of a truck as a kid in the 80's. Them were the days in the summertime going to the local lakes and rivers without a care in the world.
Seen this as a kid and seeing it again here on January 7th 2026 @ 8:03pm Pacific Time!!! 😎
This was filmed 8 months prior to my being born into this crazy insufferable world we live in presently in 2026. Crazy where time goes as you get older and look back on the old times and how much better off we were then than where society is today!!!

THERE IS NO MORE FREE SPACE. This is a cursed world by now.
Money could buy more food than now. Real or not, I like their abundance of food for anyone.
No ASPCA or Wild Life to tell you what animal you can have or not !?!?
2026 Anyone??
1 of all time faves, as an 80's kid
Where is the dog ?!
Como la familia ingallas

Great kids movie, otherwise too sappy. Also sends WRONG MESSAGE about wild critter encounters.
I remember when my brother and I always rode in the back of a truck. Do it today and they will put your parents in jail.
