  1. There is nothing eary or off about Angela or Mary in the new 'designs' which are AWEFUL. They don't seem to understand the story at all. If they stayed faithful to the original designs at least their incompetence would be masked. Changing the designs changes the story in the worst way.

  2. Looks like they are turning core characters into RPG npc's. In a narrative driven, psychological horror game. Indeed a classic game. You really shouldn't mess with the fundamentals of classics, it's not going to end well. You feel sorry for them? What? All they had to do was remaster the game. They've gone for a remake, inexplicable changes that make ZERO sense outside of pandering to modern sensibility issues.

  3. Being a huge fan of the latest resident evil games, and the whole over-the-shoulder survival horror style, I'm really looking forward to this game! But having never played the original silent hill 2, I have no nostalgia to influencing my experiences with the remake. To me it just looks like a really good game! But yeah some of the character models look a little strange compared to how great the environment looks…

  4. Unfortunately, these character designs confirm everyone's suspicions that Bloober just wasn't a good choice for such a remake. At worst, they are making these changes (especially Maria) without realizing why they looked the way they did in SH2 and hence once again proving that they are tone deaf to subtle themes of psychological horror (wouldn't be the first, just play Medium), and at best these changes are deliberate and mean that they changed Maria's and by proxy James's characters so that her old look no longer suits the new themes. Both options will piss people off, though.

  5. John really understood many of the nuances and meanings behind the creative decisions of the original game, changing many of those details as we saw in the remake also chances their meaning and symbolism. We will see how it ends up.

  6. Maria’s model face on the original SH2 looked sort of mysterious and creepy but it worked for me in the context of the game. People complain but it all comes down to the developers. You can’t expect to get the quality or level of art as Team Silent. Konami wanted western developers and they got western developers to make their games.

  7. When I saw Leon in the RE2 Remake trailer my mind instantly was “yup it’s him but in HD”, on the other hand seeing James and the rest of the characters in this Silent Hill 2 remake feel like cheap replacements “hey guys sorry we couldn’t get the original cast back but we got their stand-ins, mmmmkeeey?”

  8. Game has the Steam page since "the transmission". Advanced access, as Steam calls it, in big yellowish warning. No 3rd party EULA or 3rd party account yellowish warnings.
Priced like new game at 70, with 80 for advanced access.

  9. I wish I had played the original version, back when it was new. Something about the trailers back then, just didn't hook me on the game. But I decided to finally sit down, and play the PS2 version before the remake is released. And I dropped out, after only 3-4 hours. It's just way too clunky. The combat is terrible, and that damn camera…
The atmosphere is there, with good graphics and sound. But the gameplay haven't aged well at all.
I bet I would have had some great memories and nostalgia for the game, if I gave it a chance, 20 years ago.
I'm looking forward to try the remake instead, not being blinded by any nostalgia goggles.

  10. I'm just tired of all the conspiracy theorists that latched onto this game, analysing Angela's facial structure to prove she is a man. Bro, she's just not the prettiest girl.

  11. Looking forward to more Silent Hill 2 content from Digital Foundry. Bought Silent Hill 2 when it came out back in the day. Haven't revisited it since but I listen to the soundtrack sometimes. Really left its mark.

  12. 7:507:58 "Who knows why they would do that" (referring to covering up Maria)

I appreciate the honesty from John throughout most of the video here, rather than just shilling this terrible remake. But the above quote is a bit ridiculous. This has been a trend for at least 10 years now and Digital Foundry is just starting to pick up on it now? Alex himself has criticized Stellar Blade for its "unrealistic and outdated" female character design and now they pretend like this is something they've never encountered before and can't come up with an explanation for why Bloober Team made these changes.

  13. My problem with the characters is that they look goofy and too young, like stoned millennials. And the graphics look kinda plastic. SH2 was a unique experience, not just a game. Nothing against the remake, but I'll stick with the original.
