  1. I dont understand punting in rugby–sometimes it seems that a team is making progress running the ball up the field and then all of a sudden a player will punt the ball and give up possession to the other team?

  2. I played for 19 years before it became professional. I played in US and UK. I later coached men's and women's teams and refereed at least 100 matches. I had nearly 90 percent verbatim recall of the the Laws. I've tried to keep up with "law" changes to explain how rugby became to my eye a much less enjoyable game….boring in a word….and perhaps because "bashing" became more important than creating space and moving the ball. That was at one time the excitement and no such aberration as videos or Rugby'sy greatest Hits, Brawls, Brutality would have been countenanced. Not the spirit that all playing back then were taught over and over. To wit, the collapse of the scrum was not a tactic but a clear violation for which the "rogues, those no imbued with the spirit would be sent of and even dropped by their clubs selectors. But here we are: Explain please why the "jackel" must jackel over the back of the tackled player. Where there is no ruck formed, shouldnt' that be a free ball released or place "immediately", not cuddled requiring a struggle for it with the jackel. And how is that the a ruck is formed by binding up to the armpit with one on one's team or the opposition and yet clearly that is no regularly done in top side matches. In the same mien, how can a jackel be "cleaned out" by a shoulder charge that would be a penalty if it was done to a ball carrier ie "dangerous play". Furthermore, how is it that a maul from a lineout countenances 7 players clearly offside ie in front of the ball in possession by the 8th may at the back of the maul, and pushing the opposition ie taking part in play from an offside position. Again, keeping ones feet in the ruck…so players, perhaps side by side may get over the tackled player on their team ( who has made no attempt to roll away from the ball after having released NOT immediately) and NOT be bound not in contact with the opposition ie no ruck according to the Laws, and yet a defender can't come round the non-ruck and play the ball, or walk between the two side by side in press up position and play the ball? How is it that despite the clear statement that rucks or mauls should not ever be collapsed by design, 80 plus percent of rucks or mauls end up collapsed.? As these Laws are not fully maintained by referees, I suspect that referees in the professional game are instructed to "let things go a bit". As it is, that letting things go, means defense at the breakdown is near pointless and players spread about the field….less space for ball or runners to move. So teams "bash" by getting bigger and bigger blokes to "win the collision" and or "kick" and "kick" and kick"…How does one stop the "bashing through" by gettng bigger players as well to defend. And what if larger bodies can't run about the pitch for a full 80 minutes….we have 8 subs for them. The game has ceased to be inclusive and or require greater fitness and greater individual and team and unit skills. Not saying they don't exist, they should as pros get to practice and train, but the Laws so of "winked" at have created a game that is much less enjoyable to watch and much more injury prone to play ( study after study confirms this as do declining registered number of players in UK and Australia) I've tried for 7 years to get answers from various talking heads, and "guv'nors" and no one responds even to one question. Is the fix that unsure of itself that it dare not discuss anything the "guv'nors" have come up with behind closed doors?

  3. I’m confused on 1 thing. When a team has control of the ball and there working their way down the field passing laterally they get tackled they get up. They do it again they get tackled they get up. My question is is there a number of tries that they get before the other team gets the ball or they have to kick it away to the other team. i’ve never understood this point here.

  4. Way better than American football in my opinion.More continuous flow to the game. The average play in football lasts about 5 seconds then they stand around for 30. You spend hours watching commercials and dead play, and only about 12 minutes or so out of 60 watching the actual game. In terms of watching actual continuous play. Rugby is where it’s at. Along with the fact that there is very little protective equipment. Much admiration for rugby players.

  5. I'm watching this because I just bought tickets to a Stormers VS Ospreys game. Both my brothers played rugby growing up and my mom and I would always go and support them at their matches. I cheered for them but NEVER really knew what I was cheering for. This is a great 101 for myself and my husband. I'm going to listen to this continually leading up to the Stormers game. Thank you. This was very helpful👌🏼

  6. I´m Brazilian and rugby is a not popular as footbal and when people ask me about material to understand the game and speaks English I recomend your videos. Thank you so much for them and your service to us that loves rugby.

  7. 12:38 – BS, it's gonna be total BS. Never trust a forward's word about what's appropriate when it comes to rucks and mauls, they're all liars who're always looking for a way to break the rules to gain an advantage.
    I'm kidding, but it's still true 😜

  8. Is love at first sight possible in Sport? that's what happened to me first time i saw the World's Greatest Sport.. we found each other too late for me to ever play, but like all true love, better late than never.. 😃😃

  9. Congratulations on a superb explanation of rugby. Having watched others, particularly the awful RFU one, it’s great to see someone actually explaining the game with proper examples! This is the best one I have seen.

  10. I'm from Hong Kong. Thanks so much for the explanation ❤
    I have a question:
    Stade Francais (10) 24-27 (14) Leicester
What do the numbers in the brackets mean?

  11. Ok i knew there was a difference in positions i just didnt understand what it was but that makes sense and why my platoon leader had me play a wing position against the aussie army folks when we were deployed to iraq (ive always been a fast and kinda skinnier tall guy)

  12. Awesome video and clear explanations. I used to watch when I was living in India(though India does not play Rugby) without completely understanding it. I live in the US now and I have lost touch. Figuring out how to watch all the games on Tv from here. I have a small request. Can you do a similar video for the league version as well? thanks in advance.

  13. Thanks mate. My wife and her family are South African, and I can only bluff my way through so many rugby conversations, so your videos are great! A detailed video on penalties would be great, because it’s the main thing I don’t understand – why a penalty is being awarded. Congrats on another World Cup 👍🏻
