When you say this would not have happened if Ukraine has been fast-tracked into NATO, I agree. However, you know joining NATO is and has never been a one-day exercise. Putin know there's a process, no matter how short it is, to joining NATO. He would have made Ukraine unstable in such a way that it becomes unattractive to NATO.
Piers should know that Prof Mearsheimer is an authority on this subject. The man has been saying this for years that the West is responsible for what is happening in Ukraine.
