On January 6, 2020, former Arik Matson was shot in the head while responding to a call about a suspicious person in Waseca. The life-threatening injury changed his life instantly and began a long and difficult journey of emergency treatment, multiple surgeries, and ongoing rehabilitation.
The shooting unfolded in a public setting where others were present, including a young child who was struck by a stray bullet and later died from her injuries after being transported from a nearby dental office.
