It's on record that Charlottesville police didn't want to act more aggressively to stop the violence because they felt they were outgunned by the militias. The police didn't know who was on which side. It's too easy to appear to be in a militia that has good intentions when all of the camo, tactical gear, and assault rifles can be purchased by anybody, law abiding or not. For instance one wannabe militia member with a traitors flag patch on his chest was photographed standing shoulder to shoulder with this militia at Charlottesville. Just like in any insurgency you don't know who is and who is not the enemy. For law and order to be enforced let the city, county, state police, and the state's national guard to keep the peace at demonstrations from here on out. A neutered official police force is a waste of tax dollars. This story glossed over SPLC recommendation that assault rifles, other firearms and the appearance of militias could be misinterpreted on either side and turn into a "powder keg" waiting to go off.
