This is exactly what Black Sabbath considered themselves to be until they really broke the mainstream and realised themselves what they were pushing was something darker.
I also think James Hetfield rounded his interest in music off perfectly when they played at San Quinton to the prisoners. Paraphrasing: "We're not here to push any sales pitch or try and push any bullshit on you.
