Makarov PM Review | Cold War Military Sidearm in 9mm Makarov
Hey, it’s Matt with Midwest Guns and Gear, and today we’re talking about one of the most iconic Cold War military pistols ever made — the Makarov PM.
While the 1911 may be the most copied military handgun in history, the Makarov comes in second, with over 5 million produced and service across much of the Eastern Bloc and beyond.
In this video, I take a closer look at:
The history of the Makarov pistol and its adoption after WWII
How it replaced the TT-33 Tokarev in Soviet service
The 9mm Makarov (9×18) cartridge and how it compares to .380 ACP and 9mm Luger
Design features like the blowback action, decocker/safety, and heel magazine release
Shooting impressions and recoil comparison versus other 9×18 pistols like the PA-63 and Vz. 82
We also head to the range to put some rounds downrange and compare how the original Makarov PM handles recoil compared to other pistols chambered in the same cartridge.
If you’re into military surplus firearms, Cold War history, or are thinking about picking up a Makarov for collecting or concealed carry, this is a classic worth checking out.
