THAT LAST FIGHT HE HAD WITH ALI, ALI WAS SCORING AT WILL & ALI REFUSED TO PUNISH QUARRY ANY LONGER & THE REFEREE STOPPED THE FIGHT. I ALLLLLWAYS THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY DECENT OF ALI.
I hate when people “boo” at a match when no one’s been unsportsmanlike. It’s so disrespectful, not only to the fighters but also to the sport. You never boo a good match. Not unless you’re willing to get into the ring and fight for your right to disrespect the legend of boxing.
He had the bad luck of fighting in an era of ALL-TIME GREATS…!!! Ali , Frazier , Norton , Lyle , Shavers , etc. , etc…would have been the Champ today…!!!
Jerry started out a pretty good boxer, but later he turned slugger and got hit easily, you cant do that in boxing. He was respected by his peers and had a pretty good career.
What was so strange was that George Foreman fought at least five people Quarry. Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, George Chuvalo, Muhammad Ali, and Ron Lyle. George defeated Norton, Chuvalo, Frazier and Lyle. Lyle was the only person who Quarry beat. George Foreman still ducked Jerry Quarry. Foreman however, that he was the greatest heavyweight nonchampion.
Jerry had a lot of heart, but was undersized as a heavyweight. Its sad to see how he went out at 53. Boxing especially at heavyweight is a rough way to make a living. Unless you have a snapping jab of a Holmes or the power of a Tyson, you need to get down in weight. It certainly is a cautionary story. God Bless Jerry..
Quarry was a contemporary of mine. He was a small guy like Patterson. He came along 12 years too late. He didn't have the right attitude or work ethic. I loved his Thad Spencer fight … his Mac Foster fight … his Earnie Shavers fight … his Ron Lyle fight … his James Woodey … his Tony Doyle rematch, SHIT. If Jerry paid half attention to sleeping right, eating right, running, lifting weights, gym work, sparring, he looked fantastic. He had raw talent. But most times — for his most important fights — you'd look at his soft body and think "Holy CRAP!!! What's going on with Jerry?" He was Ron Stander X 5… Ron Stander got ready for 1 fight I know of…Earnie Shavers. Ronnie wanted to crush Shavers. But other than that???? NOPE!!
Jerry Quarry. An honest workman. Went everywhere fought anyone Never complained. A solid person & a credit to his sport RIP Jerry. You were a great one.
He was the sturdy gatekeeper of that era. So long as Quarry was there the Ron Lyles, Mac Fosters and Ernie Shavers just had to wait. He had bad breaks for sure but took too many punches as he lost mobility. There were rumors that a young George Foreman had seen Jerry as an amateur and deliberately avoided him as a pro,
Thats correct jerry quarry got a raw deal in many of his fights
Patterson: always a gentleman.

It's amazing to see these men before the brain damage ravaged their minds. Sad so many fighters have no idea what their future holds.
My Dad and I used to listen to Quarry fights on an old battery-operated radio. I think Gillette sponsored the fights in those days.
I guess playing annoying music throughout this video eas the real purpose gor making it.

A lot of white guys cheered for Jerry because he was a white guy in a sea of very formidable black fighters.
Howard Cosell is the WORST television personality of ALL-TIME!
Quarry is just one of MANY WHITE fighters who made their name/fame off of beating ex champions long passed their PRIME!
Lol.. 193 lb vs 194 Lb HEAVYWEIGHT fight?!!?? Neither guy would even be CONSIDERED in today's boxing!
Jerry Quarry. An honest workman. Went everywhere fought anyone Never complained. A solid person & a credit to his sport RIP Jerry. You were a great one.
Jerry Quarry, one of the toughest fighters to ever strap on the leather!
