I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way. When I started the game, I thought it looked and felt like an early access. The boss fights were a joke.
I enjoyed this game quite a lot and think it's better to treat the game as a collect-a-thon, but I respect your opinion, and definitely agree there is some flawed technical and level design (especially the pop-in and lack of distinct level features). It was a solid template for the future potential of open world Sonic. Updates did improve the game a bit as well.
Its pros vastly outweigh its cons
Remember when everyone was dickriding this game like idiots? Ahh, good times.
I'll never understand why you guys covered Sonic Frontiers but not Shadow Generations- oh wait, it's an actual good Sonic game to the public? No wonder..
"If they stick with this formula, they've arrived at a formula that could be the future of the franchise" (or something like that). That's the problem — they don't stick with anything. They keep the fundamental flaws and try some half-baked new thing. They just never seem to be able to buckle down and get the fundamentals right.
This completely lacks any art direction, but it's not only that, the quality of the assets is really low. Looks like they outsourced the art cheaply or it's an asset flip.
As for the gameplay, not sure speeding through the landscape super fast really adds a lot in itself. Shorter sprints applied tactically would probably be more fun and work better.
This game is 3 years old now and tbh this video both aged badly and well. Well because we are rn in the cust of seeing a impoved version of frontiers. And not well by saying stuff like "we need green hill back" the entire fanbase hates that zone now.
This aged badly
L take
Damn i just bought it, well imma put a bunch of mods, oh damn they do improve it
Downloaded it and am so glad I didn't buy. Finished the 1st island and what a mess, indeed. So much padding between the cyber levels, which imo were the highlight of the game. How many times do I have to talk to Amy? Was really annoying. Deleted it after the Titan boss. The camera lock every time it knocks you back was the fucking worst. Not at all interested in playing the rest of the game.
They made this at the wrong time. The open world had to be bland so that you could go fast and not drop framerates. If they waited for the next gen consoles they could have done so much more. It is just too hamstrung by the hardware to do what it wants. Its like they had some great ideas but had to water them down to almost nothing to make it run smooth-ish
That thing about Sonic "always rescuing Tails" and Tails being the one who "busted Sonic out of prison" is a bit "gas lighting" for my taste (either that, or Ian Flynn misremembered the events of the games); in terms of the games, Sonic rarely rescues Tails at all, the exceptions being the Game Gear version of Sonic 2, SA1, Advance 2, Unleashed arguably, and Forces. That's 5 out of 50+ games where Sonic rescues him!
As for the latter, while yes, Tails' goal was to bust Sonic out of his cell on Prison Island, it was Amy who ultimately excecuted that. Some people say "but Tails did most of the work, all Amy did was swipe a card!". Yes, but Amy was still the one who got Sonic out of prison.
this looks like it should have come out in 2004 but even the sonic games back then were way better
Bad take. Games great and a huge step in the right direction not to mention the main campaign is lengthy so you get your moneys worth while having tons of side activities for when you beat the campaign. Its a great game and i recommend anyone to buy it.
Game never got fixed. Still feels like a kids project, or an AA game from 2004
I got this deeply discounted and enjoy it but yeah this is not a full price purchase
I love this game! A year later on ps5 no issues.
There's some bias in this review like the dude is saying this game is a PS5 game no… it's a game in multiple platforms!
2:27 character details super low!? Im sorry have you looked at sonic model closely and it's texture closely ? It is super detailed you are blind.
I really hate the lack of worldbuilding when it comes to the obstacles. Like why the fuck are there rails and boost pads randomly strewn about?
why do sonic fans complain about reviewers for doing their fucking job
i’m literally a sonic fan but i almost don’t want to admit it because i don’t want to be associated with these weirdos who are like “waaah, you’re not being objective! you’re just stating your opinion!” that’s what a reviewer is supposed to do???? and it’s hard to be Completely Objective when reviewing a piece of art???
Good game
I really wanted to like this game, because of how long it’s been since the last good Sonic game, but they had to go ahead and blow it.
Real "Sega, hire this man" energy
