  1. I learned a similar move in my Brazilian jiu-jitsu class.
Some years later, I taught a similar move to my father who suffered a stroke and lost his speech, right arm mobility, partially right leg mobility. It was his daily routine to do this stand-up three times a day. It helped him get up on his feet on his own when he fell on the floor. My mother told me it was the most helpful thing for my father to learn because he was too heavy for her to pull him on his feet when he fell down on the floor.

  2. I use this as part of a DNF sequence for rehabilitation and I initially learned the first part of this transitional move as " The eleven month step through." This gets us from long sitting on the floor to kneeling on one knee. The rest of the transition to full standing comes after 12 months. It's fascinating to watch babies and toddlers effortlessly pull this off as their core strength improves.

  3. As a physical therapist that works only with seniors, i see it everyday, how only a tiny percent of them can get up off the floor even using both hands for support. I teach a lot of fall recovery and too many things get in the way of them performing each step, mainly ROM, pain, strength, balance, fear. I can take weeks of working on this task along with strengthening for them to accomplish getting up. This Barry move would have to start years before they get to the age of falling.

  4. Great movement. I wish I could do it but alas, I have a bumb right leg. "floppy foot" due to multiple spinal injuries/surgeries. 9can't raise my toes at all
) I generally have to have support (wall, chair, bench.etc.) Supposed to wear a leg brace, but I hate it, so I hardly wear it. Oh, I'm 64, pretty much obese, 30% wise, but I keep resistance training (loop bands with accessories) 3 days a week, indoor bike, outdoor bike. About 150 min per week. Funny, I can ride a bike just fine, but walking is difficult. And I eat healthy. Slowly but surely, I'm losing fat and gaining strength back. What really gets my goat is, I've had four spinal surgeries. Each time it was an improvement (ie., less pain.) Each time I've lost muscular/nerve function. One week, I get an MRI. Two weeks later, I see a specialist. Two weeks after that I get surgery scheduled. Two weeks later (If I am lucky) I have surgery. By then the nerve damage is permanent. The medical system in America sucks.

  5. This is why you don't wait until you are old, to get in shape and workout. Imagine being so feeble and/or overweight, that you can't even get up off the floor easily? So many people choose the lazy route through life, then have to deal with the consequences when they get older.

  6. Marvelous exercise to stand up from ground easily.

  7. At 02:49, Peter advises caution to only practice this after warming up well, highlighting injury risk for the meniscus.

Let me doubly recommend that, and caution, and going very slowly!

I am a highly active recreational athlete with a regular balance and mobility routine, amongst other things. I tried this for the first time and strained (luckily, just a strain) my meniscus, limiting my movement for several days.

Sharing to encourage you to go slowly and carefully! Be safe 🙂

  8. We learned this drop and spin in modern dance when I was a teenager in the 1970s. I used to easily do it. Now, I find getting up off the floor difficult. Thanks for the reminder I have muscle memory to practice with.

  9. I cannot squat at all. Please show how to lower as in squat with someone who is in my state. Also then show how to get up. Also please can you explain slowly how to get started.

  10. I was hit by a car while walking 1-1/2 yr ago. The tibia was broken into 3 pcs but with a titanium rod and time I have no restrictions. However my knee is not right. I might be able to do this on the reverse side. Any advice?

  11. I think you need to be working with seniors more! Even their balance would affect this initial “get up” ability. Show properly with seniors of different levels – not with yourself.
