Health and Safety on the Farm – We’re UMASH, the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center
Everyone who works in agriculture knows someone who has been severely hurt or has lost their life as a result of the occupation. Regardless of scale, there are ways to improve safety and health on the farm. We’re UMASH – the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center. Our center is a collaboration of several upper Midwest organizations and is one of 11 centers supported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
UMASH is focused on workers, families, employees and the safety of farmers by using a One Health approach. Our goal is to improve research, education and prevention to help those in agriculture remain safe and healthy on the job. We bring together investigators, partners, researchers, practitioners to identify trends in injuries before they become widespread.
UMASH has a number of FREE resources, some in both English and Spanish, on our website at http://umash.umn.edu There are a number of materials that are for producers, and human resources professionals who implement training for their workforce. Needlestick prevention videos, barn posters, dairy animal handling videos, MRSA study findings, safety curricula, agritourism and zoonotic disease fact sheets are examples of what is available on our website.
