Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Loved Heinrichs comment about not doing a dance after killing an animal!
300 yds is a long ways. Check it out someday.
Makes me sick all this bullshit about shooting game at 400 yds and beyond!
sorry
🇨🇦🇺🇸👍
Jeez Ron get on with it!
“ where is the meat!?”
The little 4 points I take might have a 10 inch vital zone or less. Yes I'm one of those who has no shame in taking the little guys, especially if the only chance I get is the last day of the hunt at sunset. I need to be a better shot/ close the distance best I can lol 😆
Pretty much any weatherby can
I look at the .308 as the .30-06 short. Like the 300 Winchester short mag is to the 300 mag.
McGowan, you just never know who your talking too. You DO NOT know their background. I shot Expert in the Marine Corps at 500 meters with iron sights! I am a classically trained sniper. I know my dope on all my rifles. My .338 Lapua will easily kill a WI white tail at 800-1000 yards on the fire trail I hunt on. On my land, I have killed deer at 500 yards very easily. Don’t judge others on your own inability. The key to any long range shot is Ballistic Coefficient. Once a bullet drops bellow supersonic, it becomes unstable.
Alternate to the 338 Win. Mag would be the 33 Nosler…
Most of the hunters out there cann't hit a deer at 400 yards so a 400 yard point blank cartride is meaningless.
Challenge accepted
Cyot
My 6.5×300 does……..
In hunting my property, this isn't an issue as my longest shot would fall within 300 yards.. and the closest is basically 50 feet. So, with a 7mm Rem Mag and even my 270 Winchester.. If I can see it I can hit it. Whitetails here are smaller animals, most mature bucks may reach 140-160 lbs.
In comparing calibers, I believe when we make comparisons, we need to compare mz velocity with bullets of equal bc.
220 swift or 264 win mag loading in about 100 grain
One shot, one kill, keep the distance short. You minimize variables and the chances to make that shot are way better and confident.
Its funny hearing people talking about what they hunt in thier neighborhood and with what.
Not with a factory load
Coyote, yote,coy dog,
My .270 almost could!
ALLEN magnums for those who havent heard of
POINT BLANK to me means YOUR FUCKING BARREL is or Pert-ner RIGHT UP AGAINST THE TARGET.
DEAD-EYE, at any YARDAGE, is a BULLSEYE.

Hi Ron and Betsy, I've asked before but haven't heard yet, i know y'all are busy so no worries, but wanted to ask again… what is the best way to subscribe? Should i subscribe through Patreon or directly through RSOTV? Is one way better than the other, or are they one and the same? Are there benefits to using one over the other? Thanks from James in Texas.
We set up a sheet of drywall at 650. I didn't hit it… but a deer, no problem. Target fever. Shakes start, but fur on a hoof, steady as an oak.
Ron, I enjoyed this video. Praising the 270 Winchester. And the old GrandDaddy 3006 . I've heard the Coyote referred to as Yotes, Coyote and the Yoddling Puppies All in South Dakota specially Bon Homme and Hutchinson counties.
I've taken moose from contact distance, issue in Alaska was keeping the moose away. am very proficient at punching holes in bullseyes at 800 meters.
.270 is long in the tooth, not much bullet selection. The .30-06 has a MUCH larger bullet selection. I'll never get rid of all FOUR of my rifles in .30-06!! One of them is the venerable old M-1 Garand!! .30-0AARP?? Bull Pucky!!
I think under 8" is considered "point plank" if your rifle is sighted in for 100yds
The .358 Norma is a marvelous cartridge! It's a 600 yard elk gun, not that I shoot fur that far. You don't have to track animals, they just fall over. In addition, it doesn't damage a bunch of meat.
Wow… Every deer that I have ever killed has been within 75 yards with a traditional muzzleloader. If you act like a deer, you can crawl right up to them. I have a video of me on my youtube channel doing just that. You look stupid, but you can't argue with success.
Hi Ron love your videos My grand father started one of the largest hunting clubs after ww2 in Northern MN with lots of long rang shots along a power line through are property! Are hunting club came up with a ethics rule! Which is at what range does your bullet BC & fps rifle combo run on a bc program plug in at what range a with unknown 10mph crosswind at 3 or 9 oclok right or left cross wind does your bullet move 14" ?example A low bc 3006 w 130grn w .270 bc @3000 is 290 yards this is the barrier for this combo !a higher bc 3006 180 grn @2800 it's 360 yards with a unknown 14" crosswind drift !a super high bc 6.5 prc is 425 yards etc.etc. this is the ethical hunting barrier anyone can plug into a BC Programe are hunting club has used this and it really is the very best ethical !!
33:20 well, not necessarily. Last year .32 Winchester special and .35 Remington were plentiful in western Washington shops whereas .30-30 was nowhere to be found. Ammo availability is constantly changing. I have been scrounging .300 savage anywhere I could find it for almost three years since I bought my 99 in .300 and then, suddenly, I saw a giant stack of .300 savage at a local gun store along with a giant stack of .250 savage (which I have NEVER seen in quantity). .30-30 stocks have recovered, but you can still get .32 Winchester and .35 Remington easily and at that gun store they also had a giant stack of .32-35! You never know.
Book on 30 calibers! That would be very cool!
Ron, I really enjoyed your pod casts and agree with you almost always. As a boy, I was hunting in Alaska before they had Fish and Game. Shot three caribou with a venerable 1903 Springfield 3006 when I was eleven. Made all my money trapping as a kid and have been lost in the woods many times. My question is: what do you know about the 8×57 JRS caliper. I had an ammunition supplier misship me 10 boxes, and you know the old saying, "If it looks right, it might be right," and this stuff looks very good. I can only find old double rifles made in this round. Do you know any bolt actions in this caliper. Keep up the good work and don't retire. Thanks
I believe that in Louisiana, coyote is pronounced "gumbo."
A 30 cal book would be awesome!
For the guy wanting a 338 Win mag I would look at the 338 RPM
6.5-300 weatherby mag. Just shots fast and flat shooting that’s all everyone needs.
A .30 caliber book would be awesome.
I keep it at 300 yard's or lest
How long does it take him to awnser a question? I emailed on his website over 3 weeks ago and still haven't seen a response.
Superformacnce powders are hodgden powders, Hornady works closely with them for such projects. They have detailed that many times talking about different projects on their podcast.
.26 nosler hunt 8k or above.I beg to differ Spomer
Pat mcgowan here Ron: Thanks for reading my comment on your podcasts. I looked at a couple of my reloading books Sierra and nosler and both show a 150gr boat tail of their makes loaded to 3000fps having a PBR of 5" sighted in near 3" high at 100yds. And maximum PBR being 380yds. Twenty more and they should still be in the vitals. Charts are just that though charts for people to get a idea of what their load might be capable of. And that's with the rifle used for testing. Anyone loading up anything should shoot to as far as they expect to shoot and at least 100yds more. Just to see how they'll do. My 300 win mag with 165gr TTSX zerored 3" high at 100yds drops 4"@ 400yds. My 300H&H with 150gr nosler partitions zerored the same dropped less than 4" max load was 3400fps. Both dropped around 18" at 500yds and 600yds was 4 or 5 feet. So once a bullet starts dropping they increase quickly and a lot. I don't have a 7mag anymore but with 150gr nosler partitions it dropped 7" at 400yds if I remember right. It was a mod 700 rem. And it was very accurate with everything I tried in it. It would shoot less than 1/2" 5shot groups with 150gr nosler partitions i think they were. I sold it to my nephew in 93 and he still has it. I shouldn't have said most any flat shooting rifle but some. My pre 64 270s both shoot less drop than the chart says with 130gr TTSX . I still don't like to shoot at a buck unless I know I'll kill it. Preferably 350yds or less. Much less if at all possible. I'm a old man now and all of my main hunting rifles for bigger critters are all pre 64 mod 70s. My sons have Tikka and Weatherby rifles they hunt with in western Montana and sometimes I wouldn't mind having a lighter rifle. Most times not. I've got a great shooting featherweight 270 but I think about the grizzlies in the places we hunt when my wife and I are visiting. So I usually carry one of the 300 mags. I've seen a few while hunting but so far no problem with any. Hopefully it stays that way. I'm sure the 270 would stop one but I'm surer the others will. Enjoy your videos.
“Species” and names! Right on! Always some “scientist” trying to make their name. Same with “races”. There are genotypes and phenotypes.
Any one who wants to shoot past 200 yards should be using a range finder not a point blank range and hope for the best. One of my hunting buddies does this point blank range. All he does is miss. Why???! I will tell you why. You ,he,she whoever says oh it’s 250 yards. Then miss. Go range it and guess what it what 475 yards. Yes you me most of us can not judge distance well. Then you buy a range finder and range the bushes instead of the animal and still miss. Practice in the field is the solution but most do not take the time to do this.
I wish there were chapter markers for each question/answer
