We used to rollerskate to this.
Please check and research your facts. Look at what BB King said about Elvis, he did not discriminate and BB King should know. Elvis was one of the genuine Americans who actually gave a care. This song really said so much more than the words, children need guidance, care and love to grow strong and live well. Just my perspective. 🤗🇨🇦✌️
And I grew up poor, went to an all-black HS (graduated in 81) and all my best friends in the USMC were “dark green.” So tell me I’m a “secret klansman” when I would have taken a BULLET for my black brothers—and they’d have taken one for me.
I was 13 when I heard Elvis had died. Do you think the women (black AND white) could maybe learn to say NO??
The poverty cycle is still happening now after 60 years; this is crazy!
I'm pretty sure he didn't give himself the name King of Rock. He was so humble he would have never even wanted that title. The man did not grow up with privilege like many people in the south during that time. We all need to hear these words. Does it matter what political party you're in. We need to help out the people here in our country that have been suffering in abject poverty for generations. The trick is, how do we help? Education. Education. Freedom comes from self confidence and pride. I pray for this country every day. The divide is so deep and it shouldn't be this way.
Elvis had nothing to gain by singing songs like this. He had plenty of little white girls and white boys that were loving his hound dog and his gyrating hips. Is very obvious that he wanted to use his platform to open people's minds. Elvis was not racist. And for anyone to say that means that they don't do their research and they just listen to what haters say.
What hits for me, as a white dude from sweden, is the positivity and heart of black youtube. Ur passion will take u places man
Sends chills every time I hear this
He TOTALLY championed the Afro-American community
Please watch his comeback tribut to MLK
You are on a fine journey man.
Now the ghetto is about all people! Elvis was never a racist as he learn to sing by black people
Before rating this song all people should watch "Elvis and the black community" then make an informed opinion.
Elvis loved everybody. He was good to so man people.😊😊😊
Elvis grew up in a ghetto like area; his family was dirt poor. For a while he lived in the projects in Memphis. But by the time he was about 20 years old he was totally supporting his mother, father, grandmother, and some cousins and friends by his talent, charisma, and hard work. He loved all people; color had no meaning to him.
1970 because the same sad people running stuff, not caring.
Whitney Houston mother was Elvis back up singer.
If history is erased it will repeat
Mac Davis wrote this song
I got to see him in concert in 1975, I was only 6 yrs old but it is something I will never forget. Absolutely amazing❤❤❤
Its wild. He ends the song with the beginning and to this day it still plays over and over
Elvis would never play anywhere without his backup, Elvis pushed back hard on racist people! Elvis took good care of his people, paid their medical bills, and paid them well!
Elvis grew up in a very poor family and he knew what it was to be hungry. The song waswritten for Elvis by Mac Davis. Listen to the "Duet" of Elvis and his daughter, Lisa. it always makes me cry.
One of those back up singers is Whitney Houston’s Mom.
I would invite any who hasn't heard it yet…to watch a reaction video to Elvis singing "IF I COULD DREAM"…it will blow your mind. Elvis released it around 2-3 months after Martin Luther King was KILLED…TO HONOR HIM.
Cissy Houston…Whitney's Mother…was one of Elvis's singers you see in the background as well. Most of his singers were Black. Regarding the rumors you heard…perhaps that was because some of the venues that Elvis played in…maybe didn't allow Blacks into them? I don't know how prevalent that was. I was born in the 60's and grew up in the 1970's. By then…Civil Rights were implemented. I know we have a lot left to do…in that arena.
In the 1950's when Elvis started touring with his band…Colonel Parker, his Manager…told him the Venues would not allow Elvis's Black Singers inside. Elvis told Parker…"if they can't come in with me…I WON'T PLAY THAT VENUE. I'll move to one that WILL". That was ELVIS…unfiltered. So…Venues had to allow them in or lose access to $$$$ that Elvis generated for those Venues.
Elvis was also born poor, lived in a two room shack in a poor black neighborhood, went to a Black Church prior to becoming FAMOUS and was friendly with Blacks his entire life. If you watch the Biopic of Elvis that came out a year and a half ago…you will see how often Elvis collaborated with black Singers and anyone else he wanted to work with. ELVIS WAS COLOR-BLIND.
My biggest Regret is that I never appreciated Elvis when he was alive…and that I never saw him in Concert. I didn't buy my first album until he died. I was into Pop Music and the Osmonds and The Partridge Family…so totally different path of music. Once I grew the hell up…I finally appreciated Queen and other Pop and Rock ICONS.
1970❤
I think you might of missed the deeper nuance, the circular context, how one child is dead in the ghetto – another baby child is born, in the ghetto…
Elvis wouldn't be here if it weren't for the black Gospel churches. Listen to, 'If I can Dream', sung for his friend at the time if the assassination. Your mind will be blown away, ONE TAKE!
Elvis lived in the ghetto in Mississipi
Elvis grew up poor. The ghetto he grew up in was not race specific. He saw what was going on with the treatment of white vs black “ghetto” people.
Elvis grew up going to African American church. My understanding is he had a great affinity to them. I’m an Australian but I truly respect the quality of his heart and voice to all people.
Elvis had an orchestra. He had a couple of backup groups. It was cute when you Googled when 'In The Ghetto' came out. I was taken by the expression on your face as you were watching the video. I 'grew up' with him. I'm a 63 year old white woman who was born and raised in a very small town in Texas. I can tell you so much. He supported Nixon and was villainized by most anyone who wasn't a Republican. Please help our precious Black/Minority Americans know that it is time to reach out to the WHITE democrats and emplore them to stop voting for the people who are heaping these unbearable immigrant situations upon the residents of our cities. I cried watching the Chicago city council meeting. Please use whatever resources you have to show the country this evil their elected officials are doing. Thank you.
Why does people go on like there’s no white people living in the ghetto? Poverty hits everyone of all races.
He was the Greatest man! From a loving heart and his things that he did for people! You won't see anyone from this time! He was so generous!! ❤❤
Elvis championed for this song too, he knew it was an important message. I believe it was his producers who didn’t want him to record this song and he told them he’d find another label to record his music if they wouldn’t let him.
Elvis was born in the projects he was poor , he knew this life , he was not rascist at all ,
If memory serves, the women were the Sweet Inspirations and the men were J. D. Sumner and the Stamps.
Elvis is a Black Man whit White skin
The song was written in 1969 by county singer Mac Davis and Elvis recorded it.
