  1. 1:18:45 I'd love an 8K screen so all my consoles and external devices can run at whatever resolution they want, because all common resolutions can perfectly scale up to 8K. However that's the only reason I'd get one if they are ever affordable…

  2. Wait what's wrong with the 4k version of Alien? That was entirely shot on film with purely practical effects. There shouldn't be any reason why they couldn't keep re- releasing it at any arbitrarily high resolution and having it look wonderful.

  3. God we're still going on about the gtx 970? That card had 4GB of vram. It was split into two parts but this thing about it only having 3.5GB is just AMD fanboy nonsense. I used two gtx 970s for 4k, I tested them extensively. I regularly went over 3.5GB utilisation.

  4. I disagree with Alex that the PC adapter doesn't give PC owners a reason to buy the PSVR2. The display on the PSVR2 is better than the meta quest, and if you buy a PSVR2, you suddenly have the ability to play VR games on the PS5 if you either already have a PS5 or may get one in the future. For those reasons, I think the PC adapter makes the PSVR2 the best value VR headset on the market by a mile.

  5. 422 and 420 do not operate in RGB. They operate in YCbCr

Y represents luminance, and that is always full resolution

Cr and Cb represent Chroma channels, which work differently than RGB, but are a representation of hue and saturation

422 has half resolution chroma channels, and 420 has quarter resolution chroma channels.

In all cases, if you turned the image to black and white, it would appear perfectly full resolution, but it's the color information that is lower res.

For reference, EVERY blu-ray and TV show you've ever watched is sampled at 420, and nobody really notices it, because our eyes have a lower sensitivity to color information.

The only time it becomes a problem is typically with very small colorful text.

  6. I doubted a lot about picking a LG C4 42" or one of the news 32" 4k OLED displays… and at the end I bought the LG C4 42". AND I can't be more happy with it. It's just gorgeous for gaming and content, but for work is really good too. Let see how it ages, but I just don't care, so far I'm really happy with my choice!

  7. I can totally relate to John's moment with the waterfall in Unreal, what an incredible jump in visuals that game was. Lacking a 3dfx card back when the game came out, i had to play it in software mode in 320×240 (or x200?) pixels. And it still looked better than all other games i had. The lighting, procedural animated textures, fog effects, it was all on a totally different level than what i experienced before.

  8. Though I am doubting it was for anything more than legal reasons, kudos for Sony removing the 8K as its been a thing since the 360/PS3 that exaggerating realistic resolutions that without frame rate and visual compromise on anything but the most Indy looking of games, are just detrimental to the games or just not possible. lets be honest, the current gen is not even 4K without compromise and is just about 1440p in most cases, with some being even 1080p, so 8K was never going to be a thing unless they just claimed 8K video playback, and even then, you know it would be used in a way that was designed to make people think it was 8K game capable if you didn't read the small print.

After playing a few games on handheld gaming PCs connected tot he TV, I can honestly say that 9/10 i forget the resolution its running at and the 1/10 is usually only if there is blurry text or some low res important detail which is rare, and I bet most would not even notice if their console console was running less than 4K or even 1080p unless they had an obvious res boost that they could see. Personally I would take the higher detail environments and models with more effects than a sharper image, that should be the job of a pro console if one is released. Mind you, I have been playing some old console games on PC and In many cases, on the PS1 and 2 games especially, I have been viewing higher res as the uglification filter as it shows details lower res conveniently hid. On the other hand, for the GC and Wii especially, it seems to enhance a lot of first party games as it seems Nintendo have embraced being more realistic with res which means the games hold up so much better when the res can be increased as they put the effort in to optimising for that realistic res, unlike more modern Sony and MS consoles that seem to try and set the targets to high and so seem to fall shorter than they probably could achieve better results with.

If there has ever been any doubt, its frequently obvious on DF comparisons, where the Series X may be more capable than the PS5, the PS5 frequently runs as well if not better simply due to lower res but no one would really notice other than the marketing department at MS who can claim 4K more often, and obviously the sales department (though I still think that's was down to price and the S taking the place of what should have been the diskless X, with both needing to have been cheaper than the equivalent PS5 from the get go, but seeing the alleged more powerful console running as well or slower than the less powerful one is not a good sales pitch).

  9. Most PC gamers (on steam) still only have 1080p displays. I wondered how many PC's would even have the GPU power to be playing modern games at 4k60, looking though the hardware survey it's only around 28 million that have more GPU power than a Xbox series X.

  10. Regarding the VR discussion, I'm still waiting for a headset that doesn't cost Index money, doesn't involve Meta's BS, and isn't going to fall victim to mandatory software being deprecated (currently using a Reverb G2). Part of me was hoping a PSVR with PC adaptor would be the answer (especially since I do own a PS5 and GT7), but I'm getting the impression its feature set is too compromised to make it worth it.

  11. Gears of War, is definitely a game I remember staring at the screen playing it on a half decent Plasma.(this wasnt on the games release)
There was one of the earlier missions in the City, when there is a hole in the street and you split up. Once they did a close up on Marcus, I was like nah this is peak

  12. There is one path to 8K displays that I see.

A resurgence of Passive 3D. This would equal 4K 3D since passive 3D chops the resolution in half.

This is not likely to actually happen however due to the stigma from 3D before. However, it would work and be awesome if it caught on.

It’s the same story as the 3DS unfortunately. People have a bad experience with the first iteration, and never try the second (New 3DS) and what is remembered is mostly the bad experience.

I’d say for 3D Displays most people remember the eye strain and charging of the glasses required for Active 3D, rather than the more comfortable Passive 3D. Then add that with limited content and everything is done. No demand for 3D TVs so no TVs and little content is made.

“But wait now we have VR to save 3D!!” No, this is not ideal – because you can’t share the experience locally. 3D TV is better than 3D in VR (unless you live alone) because the experience can be shared locally better on a TV.

Most people don’t live alone, however so 3D content creation faces an uphill battle.

So young people with no family yet, please go buy VR headsets and 3D content so the industry will stay alive.

Consequently, there will be a demand for 3D TVs when you do have a family.

    /end

  13. Still rocking 1080p on all my screens (minus smartphone I suppose) and I'm doing fine, not impressed with 4K honestly, 8K is a waste of time unless your whole wall is the screen like in Total Recall!

  14. 8K 60 should be reserved for VR(we aren't there yet, maybe with an assist from DLSS and Foveated rendering)

+ wouldn't you need a F*ing big TV to notice the real difference between 8K and 4K, like 120'+?? (at normal viewing distances.)

  15. 01:46:40 I do have a W-OLED Display: (Acer PG27AQDM). There are some external Tools that you can use (forgot the names, found them via Google / Youtube) that get rid of the problem entirely.
If you do not want to use external tools, your best options is to either manually tweak cleartype, activate dark mode wherever you can or deactivate cleartype completely.
After tweaking a bit to your liking, it's actually not bad. I use it as a work monitor (as an IT Administrator so I am reading all day) and it's perfectly fine.
Stock settings: Yeah, its kinda meh.

  16. It is giving up… etc. Etc. With psvr2, but they are giving me some added support (I have a psvr2/pS5 and and PC) and I’m happy. So much negative chat, but they certainly don’t have to do this at all. Other companies wouldn’t.

  17. Shipping a code in a box without a disc has been the standard for EA games for almost a decade I think. (That doesn't mean other publishers should follow suit though.)
