  1. The Greco-Roman period monuments, even Alexandria itself always make me sad. The hieroglyphs, monumental buildings and even the statuary of the period just come off as 2nd rate replicas, perversions of earlier Egyptian monuments and art. By the Ptolemaic period everything from mummification to writing had already been in decline for centuries, and it shows. Ptolemies themselves weren't Pharaohs by any standard, most of them were interested only in squeezing personal wealth from one of the wealthiest regions in the ancient Mediterranean.
