That battle scene at the end was the most absurd I've ever seen (and I've seen a few). And the attack on the village shows that the US military were no more honourable then than they are now.
Its a shame the egomaniac Custer overshadowed his highly decorated brother, that seems to be lost to common history.

It’s a movie, not a documentary. Entertaining and of its time.
When Custer divided his men up, it was a less effective force. Instead of being all united as a one force, troops were scattered about in 4or 5 columns. Commands fell apart. Skirmish lines collapsed quickly. Soldiers had no where to run. No cover in The Plains. Soldiers died where they fell.

When Custer split his command up, it was over for Custer. It was the one advantage the Indians were given. They used this. Had Custer and His entire 7th cavalry stayed together, the outcome may have been different. Indians had Winchester rifles. The 7 th cavalry had Springfield trapdoor single shot rifles. There were a thousand Indians or more at the Little Big Horn in June,1876.
The Union had horses and pistols Johnny reb had cannons.
