Actually, the principle is the same. I do judo and I also do Jujitsu. I happen to be heavy enough ,where it is unlikely that someone will pick me up off the ground a guy tried fyi
Imagine thinking that using bjj and holding on will actually work in a street fight. Then imagine your head being smashed into a concrete ground. I guess that would be a good reality check.
Judo anytime of the week Im just not down with that pulling guard or coward guard with Judo you will throw them down no sitting down having a tea on this one buddy
Both have been used effectively in self defense, but I would lean towards Judo because it emphasizes getting ground fighting done quick and getting back up. That seems safer given the other dangers in a street situation.
In Judo competitions 'tll 2000 people would slam you in the ground, some people died, then they decided this usefull rule. If the bottom guy tries a submission and the top guy lifts him up in the air, then they stop before the slam. they also banned leverage during stand up fighting as Waki-gatame or Kote-gaeshi, and they already banned ashi-garami (all type of leverage on knee-foot-ankle) in 1980, but only in competition. I think this is just to prevent people to injury themselves. This techniques are studied from black belt to 2nd and 3d dan.
well in judo calls mate if you lift your oponent from the grounds because they know what comes next, bjj just relay on you dont want to be DQ but alway there's someone who doesn't care
Judo 100%. Jiu Jitsu doesn't exist without rules. The ridiculous videos of people scooting on their butts would never fly in a real life situation. The armbar lift stoppage is a perfect example- Judo recognizes that in that situation, the lifter could easily break the armbar'ers neck, so they stop the fight. Jiu Jitsu just says, "Oh it is just illegal, so they will be disqualified if they break that guy's neck."
Judo sport is better. A mixture of of self defense and entertainment. Bjj sport – Fantasy Land in both self defense and entertainment. Who in the world thought 15 min of guard play would be entertaining, and who in the world thought the best position in a fa self defense issue would be to flop on your back or but scoot too your opponent. Bjj sport is complete fantasy.
at the end of the day, as what you said, both are sport inclined martial arts. we need to protect our competitor somehow. i mean, a boxer could throw quick open handed jabs at the opponent's eye to gain an advantage in a street fight. and conversely, a BJJ guy shouldn't go for flying armbars IRL.
1) not every bjj ruleset bans slams from this position. 2) with good enough jiu jitsu, you can stop them from getting you airborne. 3) bjj and judo are both great
BJJ surrenders the ability to retreat by placing you on the ground. Which is DANGEROUS. You need to be able to retreat at will. You need to be standing and scanning for both active and potential threats. BJJ is a fighting style that works when a LOT more conditions are met. Judo requires less conditions to be both effective and safe. You don’t want to be on the ground and all of a sudden a guys dog or friends show up. Also BJJ trains bad habits. What’s the point of knowing a self defense if your first instinct is to do a rule exploit (like hanging on to the armbar) only to realize the guy your fighting is 365 lbs and slams you.
For sports purposes there is no better choice. It's just what it is for the respective sport.
If we are talking self defense, the BJJ ruleset is a horrible idea in this very case. But you also find stupid rules in Judo for other instances, e. g. not being allowed to stand up when you are in a ground grappling tournament. This doesn't help to train for self defense purposes neither but does quite the opposite tbh.
Not rly cos it depends on the organization and there's are a few like ADCC or CJI that allows u to slam out of submissions which I appreciate for the realism. Also if u get picked up while arm barring someone ur technique sucks just cut the angle and hook under their leg u can't get lifted or dropped significantly 💀. Judo u win but throwing someone and getting swept which doesn't make sense. U can do all of that in bjj and more so
For the streets I can’t decide because it’s either slam someone on the concrete and break their back, or break their arms and stuff. That’s why I’d go to mixed grappling gyms to learn both
bjj is for kids
Judo is is for Men

judo for this

I prefer judo
If you have the strenght to lift a person ypu probably will have the strength to slam the person down. But also Judo, cant shoot for takedowns
I like striking which is why i praise judo, I like my fights standing

I am new and trying to learn the difference between bjj and judo. I want to learn this fighting style but don't know which style is better
In a street fight – Judo for sure
After 20 years I'd BJJ and I one year of Judo…….JUDO 🥋 DEFINITELY!!

I mean I feel like in a street fight as soon as the get picked up the bjj could break there arm

Judo will always be better because it was made for self defense not for sport or MMA!

Judo
Judo on feet
Jiu jitsu on ground.
2 different things with similar variations. They both balance each other well. Like salt n pepper.

BJJ is newaza
That shit ain’t working in the real world , jui jitsu guy absolutely getting his head slammed tryna pull that shit 💀
Judo
In street same position, I press his face with my foot or knees or kick his face! More effective😂
I’m picking jiu jitsu rules. That’s just me❤

If you look at judo traditional technique and the banned moves.
Its lethal.
