You've conflated cam shafts and crankshafts in modern engines. The cam shaft is used as a linear actuator to open and close intake and exhaust valves. On older models, it may be geared to turn a distributor's rotor to ensure ignition timing. The CRANKSHAFT is what "converts" linear piston movement to rotary movement. While you could argue that the offset journals of the Crankshaft are a version of a cam, it is still not a camshaft.
