Whatever the modern "interpretation" of the word, as someone who grew up in South Africa – Hottentot was used as a descriptive term for a group of people similar to the San but from the Cape area – not a derogatory word. It may have been an incorrect classification of the group but I never heard it used in a derogatory way. It stems from a word for Stutter in Dutch due to the clicks in their language but no one is around to tell whether that was originally meant as a pejorative or just as a description for a group that shared a characteristic language.

The term hottentots was used long ago by Europeans in the era the Captain would've sailed the seas. It's period correct. He wouldn't have used Khoekhoe. It just wasn't done. As far as I know, it's no longer in use.
