I deeply appreciate every single English and literature teacher I have ever had. They had deep and complex conversations with us about race, gender, class, history, and so many other things and I truly learned a lot from them. They would even preface conversations the class had with “yeah this is uncomfortable and awkward but it is something you should understand is real and should consider.” In high school i had teachers go out of their way to tell us where to get banned books and sometimes even make them part of our mandatory readings. Youth understands a lot more than some people would like to believe and we do everyone a disservice by banning books and halting deep discussions. It is truly very sad that some people want to stop meaningful discourse so that they can push a certain narrative.
