  1. As a recovery paraprofessional, the story about Rebecca rang true, but the tone was quite judgmental. It’s important that Substance Use Disorder (SUD) doesn’t happen because people are selfish or not good people! It’s a disorder that can affect anyone. People don’t act like themselves, in active addiction, but they are still good people inside, if they were good people, before the addiction! Addiction is very powerful, and causes people to do things they don’t want to do, and that they don’t believe in, sometimes. This is scary for the person who has the disorder, as well as the people around them. A lot of people think people with SUDs are narcissists, but they is no link between the two disorders. SUDs are often linked to ADHD, autism, and bipolar disorder, because they can affect judgment and impulse control. Research the latest neuroscience information, to learn more about how addiction changes the brain, and how you can help someone recover! There are some great minds in addiction research on YT, like Marc Lewis, Maia Szalavitz, and Gabor Mate

  2. The story about Rebecca rang true, to me, being in the addiction recovery field and also in long term recovery, myself. It’s very common that people who haven’t had a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) themselves judge the person who is using. That’s because it’s very hard to grasp the way addiction changes the brain, unless you’ve experienced it. People don’t become addicted because they’re selfish, and think they deserve to party all day on someone else’s dime. Neuroscience analysis of the brain scans of people addicted to chemicals, vs. healthy brains has determined the true nature of substance addiction, and why those who suffer from it behave differently than those who don’t. For complex reasons related to a glitch in its evolution, the brain responds to addiction as a survival emergency. When human survival is threatened, the midbrain (ancient brain, or “mammilian brain”) takes over, and begins shutting down nerve pathways to the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The PFC is what makes us different from other animals, but we do have an animal (mammalian) brain, plus the PFC. Without access to the PFC, we operate on instinct, and can’t reason well enough to control impulses. We can’t access rational thinking and moral reasoning. This is not just because of intoxication, as people often can’t reason well, even when they aren’t high. This is why people often act like a “whole different person,” when they recover: it’s not that they were bad, selfish people and they are reformed. They suffered from a disorder, and now they are well. There’s a big difference! Very good people can do things that are out of character, when actively addicted. The good news is the brain can fully heal from addiction, but it takes 1-3 years to grow new nerve pathways, and be fully in the driver’s seat of your own brain. This is why people in early recovery often relapse.
