16yo flies past officer (Ramsey, Minnesota, USA)

“I was conducting a traffic stop near the above location and had a single vehicle drive past me
in the right lane. The vehicle failed to move to the left lane even though no other vehicles
were driving in the same direction closely. I stopped the vehicle and verballyID’d the driver as
above. Female driver apologized and stated she knewshe should have moved over. Driver
was issued and explained her citation for Tedd Foss law.” -Ramsey PD Officer

  1. Fortunately, I haven't had to do this for a very long time now; but when I used to get pulled over, I would, if possible, leave some room for the officer on the right, so as to give him extra protection from passing traffic.

  2. One of the buildings in my boyfriend's apartment complex had the fire alarm going off the other night and everyone outside as I was leaving. I asked around if everyone was fine and they were and had no idea what was going on. They also said they had already called about it. I started to pull away once the firetruck arrived but another one pulled up about 10 seconds after it and the only way I could leave was through a narrow turn passing by the truck by about 5 or so feet. It was a very easy turn but I didn't want to impede their work or be disrespectful so I sat there and waited until everything was cleared as okay. Which it was in less than 10 minutes. Definitely was a false alarm and everyone went back inside. Only then did I think it was okay to drive past the trucks. I will never understand people and how it doesn't just click in your head, even if you don't know the law, to put the safety of first responders first! I can't even imagine not slowing down and flying past an officer like that even if it wasn't a law. People just make me so angry

  3. Being only 16, she was most likely very nervous I would have preferred he give this young driver a stern reminder of the laws and send her on her way. I think it would have had a far greater impact for both her and the department's public image.

  4. Nowadays with all interactions being recorded and available, cops can’t just let people off – they need to ticket you for something – especially here with multiple issues. Could have given her a warning for the move-over law and ticketed her for no license. Not sure which is a lower fine.

  5. This is exactly why 16 year olds shouldn't be driving cars without having a licensed adult driver over the age of 25 in the front seat with them at all times

She doesn't even know the basic rules of the road
Not only did she not move over for the police car she also didn't stop when the police car turned on lights and siren
that second violation usually gets you arrested

16 year olds do not have the judgement or experience needed to safely operate a car on their own

  6. "I promise you I don't think you're a bad person." might just be one of the most Minnesotan things I've ever heard a police officer say. Really made me smile. ◡̈

  7. Should have refrained from the citation. A heavy handed lecture, let it go for that. The insurance bill was doubled at a minimum which might v. well more than crush the family. This officer screwed up……………. Will he pay the bill………..?

  8. I've got emergency lights on my vehicle (roadside assistance/tow) and they are pretty much flat out ignored. Semis are often the only vehicles that will make a conscious effort to move over – though traffic seldom lets them. Four wheelers never bother, ever.

  9. The young and very dumb generation that'll be running America shortly. God help us.
Btw…..the officer was being very nice to this girl "AND" let her go on not having her driver's license with her. (I would've chewed her out and stuck her with a no operators permit).

  10. might've been instructive for the officer to point out to the driver while they're stopped there that not one single car goes by in the right lane; they all move over, and many can be seen returning to the right lane after passing

  11. I’m a truck driver and it amazes me how many people will pass me on the right when I move to the left for something on the shoulder. Just about every state has signs up telling people to move over for emergency vehicles or vehicles with flashing lights. It’s always been common sense and now it’s a law.

  12. In my opinion I believe that this video should be shown to all new driver's before getting their driver's license. It should be standard to show this in driver's training courses throughout the United States. It's the law and people can get killed for not following it.

  13. This chick just got her driver's license and she didn't have it with her. REALLY? When I turned 16 and got my license, I wore it like a "badge of honor". She should have been ticketed for that and lost her license for a year due to "shear irresponsibility"!!
